Spinal Decompression Therapy (SDT)
What is Spinal Decompression Therapy?
Spinal Decompression therapy is a new non-surgical technology utilizing an advanced computer controlled traction system that is SAFE and PAIN FREE. The treatment option is safe and it applies distraction forces to spinal structures in a precise and graduated manner. Distraction is offset by cycles of partial relaxation. It’s an amazing healthcare technology providing a greater than 86% success rate!
Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression is very effective at treating slip discs (herniated disc), pinched nerves, sciatica, bulging discs, radiating arm pain, degenerative disc disease, leg pain, numbness and tingling, back pain, neck pain, and posterior facet syndromes.

How does Spinal Decompression Therapy function?
Spinal Decompression Therapy has two functions:
The first function is to “suck in” disc herniations or bulges. As the Spinal Decompression table pulls, the space between the vertebrae increases. This space between the vertebrae is occupied by spongy gelatinous disc, and as this space increases a negative pressure is formed in the center of the disc causing a “suction effect” that draws in disc herniations or bulges. This takes pressure off the “pinched” nerve.
The second function of Spinal Decompression is to thicken and heal the disc. As the Decompression table pulls and relaxes, it creates a “pump effect” that rushes nutrients, blood and oxygen into the disc, and forces wastes out of the disc – this heals and strengthens the disc and increases disc thickness.
Who is candidate for Spinal Decompression?
Anyone who has been told they need surgery but wishes to avoid it, anyone who has been told there is nothing more available to help, anyone who failed to significantly respond to conservative options (medications, physical therapy, injections, acupuncture.)
Is Spinal Decompression Therapy gentle?
The DOC Decompression table is one of just a few decompression tables that uses “ACTIVE DECOMPRESSION” meaning, the table cushion and patient move together to accomplish the decompression stroke.
This is not like the old mechanical weighted units of the past, where the belting systems applied pulling force to the patient. The system we use is computerized and will go up in small increments until the maximum setting is achieved. The same is used during release. You will barely notice the pull since the computer control is so efficient. Most patients fall asleep during therapy.
How is Spinal Decompression Therapy Different from Traction?
Traction stretches your spine and muscles simultaneously. If you only stretch the spine, your body naturally “braces” for the next stretch reducing the ability for the treatment to be effective. This “overall stretching” commonly used in traction can trigger painful muscle spasms.
Spinal Decompression therapy alternates between stretching and relaxation. The relaxation stages, trick your body into staying relaxed and therefore maximizes the load and the effectiveness of the treatment.
Decompression tables should also allow to target your treatment area in 3 different dimensions. This isolates specific spinal discs and allows them to “target” their treatment, while traction often just “stretches” the entire spine.
